U.S. helicopter flight suspected in damage to South Korean homes

PYEONGTAEK, South Korea — Gusts of air from the rotors of a Chinook helicopter may have damaged several homes just outside Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek, the U.S. Army said Wednesday.
There were no injuries in the incident, which occurred around 12:15 p.m., as a CH-47 Chinook heavy-lift helicopter was leaving Camp Humphreys, said Army Maj. Vincent Mitchell, spokesman for the 2nd Infantry Division.
The homes reportedly damaged were just outside the post’s perimeter wall, Mitchell said.
The helicopter was assigned to the division’s 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade headquartered at Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek.
Mitchell said the Army would investigate what occurred and was also "cooperating" with Pyeongtaek city officials.
"And if it is confirmed that we are the cause of that damage, then we’re going to do everything as quickly as possible to assist those, our Korean neighbors, to quickly restore their homes to where they were," Mitchell said.
No further details were immediately available Wednesday night, Mitchell said.
